“Your assumptions are your windows on the world.
Scrub them off every once in awhile (so the light can come in).”
—Isaac Asimov
Are you struggling with life-stress and relationships personally and at work? You might wonder why you would seek therapy with a clinical psychologist who specializes in treating children and adolescents!
In reality, most of what we learn about relationships and stress management we learn as children, either in relationship with our relatively healthy family system or in reaction to trauma in that system. We have a lot of research that demonstrates that even one or two traumas make an impact, and four or more can impact your life! These traumas can be something as seemingly, now, far away and insignificant – bullying by peers in middle school, parental divorce for example – to the “big ticket” items of homelessness or abuse/neglect.
Understanding the connection between where you have come from and where you are allows you to thoughtfully consider and “re-parent” those aspects of yourself and your experience that will benefit from that enlightenment and self-compassion moving forward. This can be a great benefit of an experience in individual therapy.
I invite you to give yourself the gift of time and care for yourself, to bring some fresh light into the room.
